The custom soon spread throughout the various states and in 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual event. By the time the middle of the 19th century arrived many other states were also celebrating a Thanksgiving Day. So in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln, more than 200 years after the Pilgrim's celebration, appointed a national day of Thanksgiving.
Since then each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation, usually designating the fourth Thursday in November as the holiday.

The turkey is synonymous with Thanksgiving celebrations so it's only fitting that 256 million of the birds are raised! Turkey Day just wouldn't be right without the turkey now would it?
