Featured Doll Artisan Karin Smead

For someone whose favourite tools include a toothpick and dissecting tools, taking her time is a must.

CDHM artisan Karin Smead creates handmade sculpted 1:12 dolls in dollhouse scale including santas, tudor and character dolls "I use a dental tool, toothpick, very small brushes, Q-tips and a dissecting pick in my sculpting. The tooth and dissecting picks are my most-used tools because I can create very thin lines in my clay with these tools," she said.

Besides Mother Nature, she is inspired by the works of Maria Santos, Patricia Rose, the Creager's, Janet Middlebrook and Annemarie Kwikkel. As she comes by her artistic talents naturally, she also finds inspiration in her parents.

"My father and mother are artistic and have talents all their own. My father used to paint and draw for a living and my mother also paints as a hobby. I think they were surprised by the response I got from selling my miniature dolls. They are supportive of most of my art adventures, but I don't think they ever thought this would work out as well as it has," she admitted.

Her whole life has worked out well, something she is grateful for with each day that passes.
