Or, of course, there's the Irish legend that casts Jack as a man who led a life of drunkenness and mischief who, on one occasion, tricked the Devil into climbing an apple tree with the promise of cider when he reached the top. While the Devil was climbing, Jack carved a cross into the trunk of the tree, thereby stopping the Devil from getting down!
On his death and as a result of his wicked life, there was no chance of Jack getting into Heaven, so he headed straight for Hell but, oh dear, when he arrived at the gates of Hell it was only to find that the Devil remembered how he had been tricked by Jack and he was not allowed in! Jack was left to roam the spirit world and the only time he becomes visible is on Hallowe'en trying to break through to this world again!
It could be that it wasn't cider Old Scratch wanted at the top of that apple tree but fancied taking a bite out of some of the tasty looking apples made by Orsi Skulteti.
