Not many people can turn an obsession into a work of art. After all, an obsession may be okay if you're twelve and you just adore the latest teen idol, but if you're an adult is it really such a good thing? Checking out Lucy Maloney's obsession the answer is yes, it's a great thing.
Lucy creates miniature furred dogs in 1/12th and 1/6th scales.
"I can work with you and make other animals. I have made many cats as well, but dogs are my specialty."
The 1/6th scale, or Barbie Doll scale as it's also called, is where she finds the most joy.
"I like the larger scale of 1:6. Maybe because as a child I made model dogs for my own Barbie doll. It brings me back to my childhood possibly. I have always been obsessed with dogs in real life and started making miniature dogs by accident. When my parents' Yorkie died I created him in miniature for them. After that it just took off."
This humble beginning has evolved into a full-blown miniature business: Lucy Maloney Designer Dog Miniatures. Working from her loft studio in Welch, Minnesota, Lucy's work often fills the void left by a deceased pet.
