"I actually saw one of these kits at a shop I was at and it looked like the kind of challenge that I enjoy. The fact that it was so tiny and it would take up such little space was definitely a factor also. And again... The landscaping!! Love doing it!" said Lori.

The three builders agree on one thing - custom houses are CUSTOM!

"The special orders that I get pretty much depend on what the person is looking for - some people want them as little dollhouses for their larger dollhouses and some people want them to stand alone as a collectible," said Lori.

Deb agrees but also frequently has to work clients' other miniatures into the design. CDHM category feature, CDHM The Miniature Way, June 2010 Dollhouse Tourism featuring CDHM Artisan Kim Saulter creates shabby and cottage style custom dollhouses

"The non-themed custom dollhouses that I build all seem to have one thing in common - they are intended to be a canvas behind the miniature collections of the owner. The most important aspect of these houses is that they have the correct color palette and balance to bring the furnishings to life," began Deb.

"I usually ask the owner to show me examples of the type of furnishings that will go in the house - a surprising number of houses are actually built around just *one* specific miniature - so we can work together to select not only the right color, but the right shades of those colors in each room," she said.

This includes woodwork and wallpaper color and patterns that will not only harmonize with the rest of the room, but provide the perfect background for the owner's miniature furniture.
