Pre-Hispanic decorative techniques included impressions from objects or created stamps or incising with pointed sticks and various methods of including color were utilized. Over 30 known methods have been documented, but the designs fall into four
basic categories: geometric, realistic/naturalistic, symbolic and pictographic. Most designs are related to designs on
other crafts such as textiles, basketry and murals.
Post-Hispanic ware almost completely wiped out native traditions, especially the creation of religious figurines of native gods that were replaced by images of the Virgin Mary, angels, friars and devils. The
