Name:

Kelly Curtis

Where do you live?

Santa Monica, CA, USA

What do you make?

1” Dressed Beds and occasionally 1/2” beds too. I love creating beds with tons of teeny trimmed pillows, draped silks, and throws that puddle to the floor.

When did you first become interested in miniatures?

In the 6th grade, I received a dollhouse kit for Christmas and l had it built by the end of the week! I started making furniture for it and have been hooked ever since.

Where do you find inspiration?

A pretty piece of fabric, a scrap of ribbon, full scale interior design magazines.

Where do you sell your products?

From my website mostly.

What is the price range for your products?

Most of the beds are about $135 USD. Sometimes I’ll dress a really elaborate Bespaq sleigh bed or similar which are more in the $350 USD range.

What does your family think of your art?

They are very supportive of it and often save me little scraps of things they think I might want to use for something mini.

Do you belong to any groups or clubs?

I’m a member of IGMA, SmallStuff Digest and of course CDHM.

Do you run workshops? If so, please tell us about them.

I haven’t taught a workshop yet, but would love to try it sometime!

What shows do you attend (if any)?

I just did my first show this past February in Culver City with the Miniatures West Club. I try to attend as many shows as I can in the nearby area, but usually just as a shopper. I am hoping to show the beds at more shows in the future however.

Have you made any special items?

No. But I love doing custom work and it is so much fun working to make that very special piece for someone.

What do you love most about miniatures?

I love making something that maybe you wish you had in real life. Anything from a very feminine frilly little crib, to an elaborate luxe dressed sleigh bed with animal prints!

Do you have any formal training in your miniature field?

I’ve always loved art and in college took as many art history classes as I could. Other than that, I am pretty much self taught and just like experimenting to see what colors and textures are visually pleasing.

What tool could you not live without?

A toothpick.

What's the biggest difficulty involved with working in miniature?

I do not sew much, so it is especially challenging if I need a tufted quilt or bedding that requires stitching. I love the look of it, but it takes me forever!

What's next for you and your creations?

I love dressing beds and always want to be designing new unique pieces. Eventually I’d love to branch out and make matching pieces for the beds, such as little filled armoires or dressed vanities.

What's your favorite season and why?

Summer! I live on the beach, so I love the sun and water!

Favorite guilty pleasure?

Chocolate!

Biggest pet peeve?

Getting to the front of the Starbucks line and still not knowing what to order.

If you could go back in time, in which time period would you live?

Victorian, I would put lace on everything if I could!

What's in your CD player right now?

The Beatles.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Fresh croissants.
