The "Miniature Auction," held in March each year in Somerset West in the heart of our famous vineyards, is an exciting event where some miniatures of the highest standard in South Africa are submitted and sold to the highest bidder. One can always feel the electricity in the air as each item is being auctioned, and the tangible excitement of the winner of the bid.
Unfortunately, the availability of local supplies is still limited, when compared to other countries, but the internet is frequently used to search for, and purchase, needed supplies.
It is my opinion that such difficulties in sourcing materials and supplies in South Africa has created a nation of miniature artists who are incredibly skilled at being resourceful and innovative. This has often led artists to the road to success to be awarded accredited artisanship by the International Guild of Miniature Artists.
