Welcome to The City of Gold, home of the first miniatures club in South Africa!
South Africa is still an emerging miniature market.
The first miniature club "Johannesburg Society of Miniature Enthusiasts" was founded in 1989. Johannesburg was called "The City of Gold" because of the discovery of gold in this area in the late 19th century. Cape Town soon boarded the miniatures bandwagon with "The Miniaturia Guild of Cape Town." Cape Town is famous for its stunning views of Table Mountain.
With miniaturists well on their way to establishing the hobby in South Africa it was only natural that master artisans would emerge. A second club in Johannesburg was established, called "The Academy of South African Miniaturists," which in addition to giving workshops, also set up a committee to evaluate the work of South African miniature artists. The group awards "Certificates of Artisanship" to artists who meet the strict standard of work required.
