History of Miniatures, Part II

The History of Miniatures showing miniature egyptian modelsIn Part I of our series, we learned that the word miniature had nothing to do with something small, but was instead derived from the Latin word minium, the name of the red lead commonly used to paint pictures. Eventually the word evolved to include anything small. But what's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. That which we call a miniature by any other name would be as small. (Thank you, Shakespeare.)
