Between Reality and Dreams

Do you remember what fascinated you with the miniature artform in the beginning? The enchantment of tiny, intricate pieces that look just like the real thing? Or was it the fantasy of your childhood dreams? Maybe it was from daydreaming while watching the clouds. That moment between reality and dreams. Whatever it was initially, there was explosive magic that lingered long after your day was done.

For the artisan it's easy to fall prey to the intricacies of the process and forget this magic. Recreating the essence in words is essential when attracting a new collector base. As the artist, Henry Moore stated,

"All art should have a certain mystery and should make demands on the spectator. Giving a sculpture or a drawing too explicit a title takes away part of that mystery so that the spectator moves on to the next object, making no effort to ponder the meaning of what he has just seen. Everyone thinks that he or she looks but they don't really, you know".

We tend to fall victim to our own creativity when writing about our creations with information overload on how-to and fall short on providing those twinkling, daydreaming moments that had you make the piece and would attract the Collector. With information overload comes poor retention. With poor retention come weak branding results. We all know what happens if no one remembers your brand; business stagnates.

The objective each person should consider is that the focus of titles & descriptions should not be talk of how you created but rather the imagination of the creation. You are in business to make money; finding that niche that draws the attention of the collector is a means to that end.

Community as Interactive Marketing

Today's "I Want It Now" culture dictates that you make people happy by providing what they want, when they want it. This requires learning a new talent, marketing.

Most of us do not have the time or the talent to reach such tedious goals. Doing your research and taking time to consider your marketing strategies can become overwhelming. Reaching out to your community of sellers enables you to run ideas past other sellers. "Making your online business a site that fosters community", is described by Internet World magazine (March, 1995 issue). In the same issue, the editors wrote "5 Keys to Successful Net Sales" that stated "even though a store resides in cyberspace, it should build a community - a place where it feels good to shop." Do your descriptions make the shopper feel good?

While plans do sometimes change, one of the challenges faced by artisans is how to be proactive rather than merely reactive. Having a plan in place and following it allows you, the entrepreneur, to move the business forward. Advertising and marketing are long term investments in yourself, not an instant fix to your selling needs. Staying the course will enable you to build the assets you need to establish yourself as an artisan business.

The song,
'Pure Imagination' from the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sums up the world of miniatures so well. Take a few moments and take in the words and remember.

Come With Me
And You'll Be
In A World Of Pure Imagination
Take A Look
And You'll See
Into Your Imagination
We'll Begin
With A Spin
Traveling In The World Of My Creation
What We'll See

There's no retirement for an artist,
it's your way of living so there's no end to it.
