CDHM Marketing Review

Many artisans utilize Internet market places such as auction sites to sell their creations from home. These sites can be both a quick means of obtaining a larger global market and making a fast sale.

However, market saturation at these sites is a growing obstacle for artisans. You need to be aware of two important concepts - Style Recognition and Integrated Marketing.

What are these? Why are they important? Keep reading!

Style Recognition.
Every time someone sees your work, hears about it, reads about it, or touches it, your style becomes more recognizable. Your style defines how your art is different, and how that difference matters to someone who might buy it. Ultimately, style recognition is how someone perceives your art. This is what influences Buyers to purchase from you.

Integrated Marketing. This concept comprises all the tactics that ultimately get someone to buy your creation at a price they consider fair. Integrated marketing is everything that influences your potential customer - ads, articles, newsletters, flyers, blogs, business cards.

Some basic rules to remember:

1. One image, one message.

Develop and use one name and logo for all of your marketing materials. Establish a presence on the Internet that clearly indicates who you are, what you do and how you can be contacted.

2. Styling Your Art.

This is really important. There are countless studies on how many times a person has to hear, see, or read something before it sticks. You might be inclined to vary your logo, colors, etc. Resist the temptation. Stay consistent and make sure your name is unique. Then move onto promoting you, don't be shy.

3. Promotion.

Subscribe to marketing sites like CDHM and utilize social-networking sites which promote your art form.

Set up a web site, even if it's a picture trail. Start with a well designed small site, then expand and adjust as needed. The most important aspect is to build a following.

Be unique. Stand alone but be memorable. Make your presentation stand out from the rest. If your image layout looks like every other site, why should the customer remember yours?

Don't limit your site to images only. Describe your inspirations and goals. Integrate your personality into your site. Be credible and trustworthy.

Keep your website current and up to date. Rotate your images. Don't become lax in showing off your new creations. Keep them coming chronologically and feature a variety of art creations. This shows growth and progression in your art form. Remember to always write your descriptions for the Buyer's point of view. Remember the magic of what you want the Buyer to see.

4. Networking.
Get as many links leading to your site as possible. Keep in mind that if you ask someone to put your link on their site, you need to offer that reciprocal link back. This will bring visitors back to your site if you help promote other artisans as well.

Make sure you have links to all sites that offer your art. Excluding a site that carries your creation is like forgetting that you are trying to sell something from your own website.

Join discussion groups and mailing lists for artists and collectors.

Write a newsletter about your art specialty and build a mailing list for it. A big caution here - Make your list an opt-in or subscription list so you won't be accused of spamming.

5. Imaging.
All graphics should be sharp, colorful, and reasonably quick to load. The average person will wait less than a minute to see your graphics. The slower your graphics load, the faster you lose customers.

6. Pricing.
Going too low will devalue your art. Going too high will limit sales. On the Internet, you can experiment. Do some research, determine the value that your art form is being listed for, ask yourself if you are comfortable with this price. But do not lower your price standards for the site you are listing with. Doing this will devalue your art form. Then customers will expect this lower standard in the future.
