Customized 1:12 Scale Art Deco Dollhouse by Katina Beales "As much as I love this theme it has certainly been challenging! I have struggled with this discipline to not over-furnish the house! But I think I have got it right in the bedroom and bathroom. The living/dining could be less furnished, and I let myself go a bit in the study! I kept to the idea that I would not have any design that was after 1934 - design began to get heavier after that date, I think. My calendars in the kitchen and study are 1934," she added. Choosing colors for her project was definitely easier than choosing the furnishings has been.

"The house came decorated white throughout - Chris made me choose a white paint, nothing with brighteners because 30's paint would not have had this constituent. I never thought it would be so involved!

"Leopard print is a recurrent theme throughout. I have always liked animal prints and thank goodness so did the Art Deco designers! My sister-in-law, Wendy, sewed a Chinoiserie carpet for me that is in the dining area. It is black, gold and red, so these were the colors for the living dining/area.

"I did not want a bright palette in the house and kept everything, really tight, to a few colours. I have three color schemes for the bedroom that I change depending on the season. Leopard print, Chinoiserie blue/white and blue silk. I also have two different 'throws' for my sofa in the living room."

Her desire to make the house as authentic as possible made Katina put her day job to good use.

"I work in a children's library and got everyone to look out for Art Deco books. I also spent ages, hours, days on the internet looking at styles and designs! I took a lot of inspiration from a TV show, Agatha Christie's, 'Poirot.' The sets on that show are fabulous. My sideboard is based on one that the detective had in his London apartment.
