CDHM artisan Kris Compas creates handmade dolls house scale furniture "I like one-inch scale. You can get much more detail than in the smaller scales and I like the details."

Liking details doesn't mean they have to stay within one particular style or period.

CDHM artisan Kris Compas creates handmade dolls house scale furniture "I really like the 1920's through the 1960's for furniture. I try to make contemporary, too. There isn't much commercial contemporary furniture out there."

As with most miniature artisans, Kris started making furniture using skills she learned in life and scaling them down for miniatures.

"I do not have any formal training, but I have craft skills from everywhere. I have sewn my clothes, quilted, knitted on a knitting machine and dabbled in many other crafts. I think any good miniaturist has this background, that's how we can turn just about anything into a miniature!"

It started with a metal dollhouse. Kris can't really pin down when the miniature bug struck her, but she does admit that miniatures have always had a place in her life.
