An over abundance of food is one of the seemingly necessary facets of Christmas! Mince pies, Yule logs, Christmas cakes and puddings, gingerbread houses and of course the turkey or goose... enough food to last at least a month!
Many Christmas foods are steeped in centuries old tradition, none more so than gingerbread, which has been baked in Europe since the 11th century. Sometimes a soft, delicately spiced cake, sometimes a crisp, flat cookie, sometimes a thick, dark square served with lemon sauce and whipped cream.
However it came, it was almost always cut into shapes like stars, women, animals and men and always brightly decorated.
Gingerbread houses are a joy to create in miniature... The only limit is the imagination! Anything from elaborate Victorian houses, decorated with colourful candies and dripping with sugar icicles to fantastic, turreted castles to the classic Hansel and Gretel cottages - all are colourfully decorated and epitomize
Christmas!
