17th Century Pirate Captain's Cabin c. 1680, designed and built by Henry Kupjack Studios, 2004 Collection of the artist.
This miniature room depicts a 17th century Spanish Galleon Captain's cabin. It would have been a captured trophy vessel of a pirate crew who often commandeered ships as booty. There are few existing surviving examples or drawings of ship interiors from this period so some artistic license was necessary in creating this model.
One can see here the plundered treasure of the pirate crew being divvied up on the table in this cabin. The interior and furnishings are typical of the Spanish/ Flemish style of shipbuilding and fittings in the 17th century. The room is placed in a decorative chest in the Spanish style of the 17th century especially created for this room.
