The colors red and pink also relate to the all-powerful Cupid.
The Greeks and Romans believed that the rose was the symbol of their beloved goddess of love, known as Aphrodite and Venus, respectively. According to the myth, roses appeared on earth as Aphrodite/Venus emerged from the sea.
Historic painters endorsed the romantic mythology. From renowned Italian painter Sandro Botticelli comes the famous painting the "Birth of Venus," showing roses surrounding the goddess as she emerges from the sea. It served as inspiration for Victorian-era suitors to give roses to their ladies as a symbol of their love.
