They both have the audacity to look as if they've never heard those words before. I tell them to "place" again, and then tell them to "stay". Now, my intention is that they "stay" until dinner is finished. Their interpretation is to "stay" just long enough for me to open the oven door.
One of them now sniffs the floor around the stove making it impossible for me to completely open the oven door, while the other stands on my foot.
"Girls, GO LAY DOWN!!" I command.
They must sense my frustration because they both turn tail and walk away.

Just not for long.
I'm so intent on not crushing a tail or paw that I begin to lose my focus and a potato slice drops to the floor. Both dogs dive for the potato at the same time, knocking me off to the side where I almost whack my head on the microwave. Their antics continue until the meal is placed on the table, at which time both dogs promptly lie on their pillows and fall fast asleep.
