In keeping with this month’s Americana theme, it was pure serendipity that I rediscovered the miniature log cabin a friend gave me a while back. I had given a passing thought to building a log cabin myself because the simple, organic design really appeals to me, not to mention the historical angle.
Imagine what life was like in the early days of America. Trekking across vast stretches of often inhospitable land carrying all your possessions in a horse or ox drawn wagon had to result in a lot of damage and destruction. Not to mention space limitations!
Which meant the early pioneers had to make do for the most part with whatever materials they could find once they arrived at their destination, and trees tended to be more plentiful than stone as well as easier to work.
The basic lay out for those early, rough hewn log cabins was fairly simple: either a single story or a story with a loft above for an extra bedroom. And the whole thing could be constructed using one axe.
