Meet Sue Pendleton

Sue's CDHM Gallery

Artist:

Sue Pendleton

Where do you live?

In the beautiful Texas hill country near Kerrville, Texas.

What do you make?

I design and make miniature teddy bears and dolls, mostly in crochet.

What scale do you enjoy working in?

My favorite designs are 2.5 to 3 inches, so the teddies would be 30 to 36 inches relative to 1:12 scale.

When did you first become interested in miniatures?

I've love miniatures all my life. I remember creating miniature rooms inside match boxes when I was 5 or 6 years old. So, how does a retired civil servant end up designing doll and teddy bear patterns?

My mother taught me the basics of thread crochet when I was about 10 years old or so. I made basket after basket, because I didn't know how to read patterns, or make the crochet into a flat circle! Years later I taught myself to read directions, and became a "crochet fanatic", staying up until all hours of the night to finish doilies, sweaters, and blouses.

A few years ago I noticed these darling little crochet bears for sale on EbayŽ, and I wanted to make some too. At that time I looked and looked, and couldn't find a pattern, so I started to design my own. That's how Bluebeary Treasures was born.

I love to create with my hands -- crochet, knitting, painting, decoupage, sewing, drawing, doll making -- if involves creating, I'd probably love to try it!

What does your family think of your art?

They're very supportive.

Where do you find inspiration?

So many places - books, catalogs, fairy tales, nature.

Where do you sell your products?

I have a web site, www.bluebearytreasures.com. I also have stores on Ebay and Etsy, and occasionally sell on Bid4Bears and TeddyPatch. In addition, some of my patterns will be listed in the January Annie's Attic catalog.

I have a CDHM Gallery that I hope you will visit also.

What is the price range for your products?

From $3.50 for a simple pattern to $250 for a very detailed bear.

Do you belong to any groups or clubs?

CDHM, then also, I belong to several on-line teddy bear, miniature, and miniature knitting and crochet groups.

Do you run workshops? If so, please tell us about them.

Not yet!

Have you ever been published?

My bears have appeared in Teddy Bears and Friends and Teddy Bear Review magazines. Bluebeary Treasures is the subject of a feature article in the December 2007 issue of Teddy Bear Review. Annie's Attic will publish a booklet of my jar doily patterns in January 2008.

What do you love most about miniatures?

They're magical. I enjoy seeing the detail and artistry that artists put into their work.

Do you have any formal training in your miniature field?

No. My mother taught me to crochet when I was 9 or 10. Oh, I did learn to knit in an 8th grade Home Economic class!

What is your most valuable tool?

My good old crochet hook!

What's the hardest area of your work to create?

Faces. It gets easier with practice, but I still wonder every time whether or not I'll be able to pull it off.

What's next for you and your creations?

I plan to keep on keepin' on! I'm having a blast and we'll just see what happens next.

What's your favorite holiday and season and why?

I love the season beginning with autumn and going into Christmas. There's a special feeling in the air when the weather begins to turn cool and crisp. It's a time of year when families come together, and there's more good will than at any other time of the year.

Favorite guilty pleasure?

Comfort food! I love my mother's peach cobbler, chicken and dumplings, corn bread, and biscuits. (Yes, I'm a southern gal!)

Biggest pet peeve?

Rude and thoughtless behaviour.

If you could go back in time, in which time period would you live?

I'm fascinated by all things Victorian.

What your favorite saying?

It is what it is.

What's in your CD player right now?

The Early Years of Jesus' Life, with Dr. RC Sproul.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

My miniature schnauzer, Beau!
